Dear {{first_name|Creative Soul}},
We hope this letter finds you grounded and inspired, ready to explore another transformative practice that can enrich your yoga journey.
We’re back in Las Vegas and preparing for the next big chapter in our lives as we get ready to welcome our second baby in the coming weeks!
Bre has been dedicated throughout her second pregnancy to filming classes, recording interviews, and creating valuable resources for women to use throughout the stages of their journey (more to come on this sooooon!).
During such a special time, journaling feels like a wonderful way to capture moments and work through changes. However, journaling at any time in life, and you’re never too young or old to start! Especially when things move so quickly these days, it can be the perfect way to slow down and start integrating what we are learning and experiencing before moving on to the next thing. In order to journal in any way, it requires you to consider and organize your thoughts. This can be a powerful way to process some of the world which exists in our mind as this can often feel too complex to sort through or explain.

Why Journaling Should Be Part of Your Yoga Practice
Journaling can also be a beautiful complement to your practice. By incorporating journaling into your yoga routine, you create an opportunity to dive deeper into your inner world, exploring the connections between your physical, mental, and emotional states.
Consider beginning your yoga session with a few minutes of quiet reflection, setting an intention for your practice. After your practice, especially your meditation practice, find a comfortable seat and take out your journal. Allow yourself to freely express your thoughts and feelings that arose during your practice, jotting down any insights, aha moments, or challenges you encountered. No need to analyze anything, just write it down. Then after several weeks of doing this you will see recurring topics and thoughts that keep coming up. Those are the ones that likely will need your attention in real life by taking action on them. Bre and Flo give more details about this here in their intro to meditation class in the Expand Program.
The Benefits of Journaling for Mental Health and Wellness
Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection, introspection, and personal growth. Writing about our thoughts and feelings can significantly reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance emotional well-being. The simple act of writing it down is already very powerful. It allows us to explore our thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a safe and non-judgmental space. Through the act of putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys, voice to recorder…), we can gain clarity, deepen our understanding of ourselves, and cultivate a greater self awareness.
Different Types of Journaling Practices
There are no right or wrong ways to journal. You can write freely, use prompts or guided questions, or even incorporate sketches, doodles, or collage into your journaling practice. Starting with small journal entries, jotting down a few thoughts to begin with is a good way to start. The key is to create a space for self-expression and self-discovery that feels authentic to you. Here are some to try out if you need some inspiration.
The Artist's Way (Morning Pages): This method encourages you to write three pages of stream-of-consciousness thoughts first thing in the morning. It helps clear your mind, allowing for creativity and self-discovery.
Gratitude Journaling: Focus on writing down things you are grateful for each day. This practice can shift your mindset towards positivity and help cultivate an attitude of gratitude, cultivating happiness and optimism.
Expressive Writing: Set aside 15 minutes to write about any worries that keep you up at night shows many benefits - from improving lung function in people with asthma, to improving scores on exams and cognitive tests.•
Dream Journaling: Record your dreams upon waking to gain insights into your subconscious mind. This practice can enhance creativity and offer clarity on personal issues and contribute to emotional well-being.
Reflective Journaling: After an experience or event (like a yoga session), write down your reflections, feelings, and lessons learned. This helps deepen your understanding and encourages personal growth.
Art Journaling: Combine writing with visual elements like sketches, collages, or paintings. This method allows for creative expression beyond words and can be particularly freeing.
Mind Mapping: Instead of traditional writing, create a visual representation of your thoughts and ideas. This technique can help organize complex ideas and stimulate creativity.
Bullet Journaling: Use a bullet journal with dotted pages for creative customization. This versatile tool helps track various aspects of your life, from mood to daily activities, while also serving as a space for personal intentions and reflections.
Digital Journaling: Consider the pros and cons of digital journaling compared to traditional handwritten journals. Digital journaling can be more portable, easily accessible, and secure, while handwriting offers creative benefits.

Journaling can give you the headspace you need to gain clarity and embrace your journey.

How to Build Your Own Journaling Practice
It’s common to encounter barriers when starting a journaling practice, such as lack of time, writer’s block, or self-criticism. To overcome these obstacles, try setting a regular journaling schedule, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day. Use journal prompts or exercises to spark your creativity and try different journaling techniques to see what works best for you.
Remind yourself that journaling is a process, and it’s okay to make mistakes or write imperfectly. The goal is to express yourself freely and authentically. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey of self-discovery.
As you continue your journaling practice, you may notice patterns, themes, or shifts in your mindset and perspective. Journaling can serve as a valuable tool for tracking your progress, recording your reflections, and celebrating your personal growth throughout your yoga journey. We started doing it as part of our own meditation practice and sometimes don’t look back at what we have written at all. You can see our Expand videos here to get you started.
Remember, journaling is a personal practice, and there's no pressure to make it perfect or profound every time. The beauty lies in the journey of self-exploration and the willingness to be present with your thoughts and emotions. The word journal is even related to the word journey because they both come from the Latin word diurnus, which means "of a day”. So enjoy the uniqueness of the adventure into yourself each day.
With love and reflection,
Happy journaling!
