Dear friends,

However you found your way to this letter, we thank you and salute you for stepping away from the endless scroll, the flashing notifications, and the lure of instant gratification - if only for a moment. In a world that conditions us to crave quick hits of dopamine, it takes real intention to slow down and invest your time and energy into something deeper, something that doesn’t deliver its rewards in four seconds but lasts far longer.

Are You Chasing Dopamine or Living With True Fulfillment?

It would be so nice to say that, as yogis, we are immune to the pull of dopamine highs and the cycle of wanting more. But, living in the modern world, it is increasingly challenging to navigate through the trappings of chasing pleasure and falling into habits of addictive behaviors that keep us in the dopamine spike loop.

Like everything else, becoming aware of these habits and behaviors and the way they make us feel is the most important step because from there, we can take action to change. So let’s get stuck into the what, why, and how to free yourself in order to find fulfillment again.

The restless mind leads us to chase pleasure, but stillness reveals joy.

– The Yoga Sutras

What is dopamine?

Dopamine is often called the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, but it’s more than just a pleasure molecule. It’s the driving force behind motivation, goal-setting, and reward-seeking behavior. It fuels our desire to learn, create, and move forward.

But here’s the catch: dopamine isn’t about happiness, it’s about wanting. The more we stimulate it artificially through social media, processed food, shopping, or endless scrolling, the more we train our brains to crave short-term highs instead of deep fulfillment.

🔹 Have you ever wondered why you can’t stop scrolling at night, even when you’re exhausted?
🔹 Why does that first bite of cake feel incredible, but the second (or tenth) doesn’t quite hit the same?
🔹 Or why do some people keep seeking the next big thing - a new job, a new partner, a new city, but never feel truly content?

It all comes down to dopamine dysregulation and the modern world is designed to keep us hooked.

But there’s good news: you can reset your dopamine system and retrain your brain for lasting joy. It starts with awareness and simple, intentional changes.

SIDE NOTE: If you're still with us after that intro, you're already ahead of the average newsletter reader! Research suggests that some individuals spend as little as 9 seconds reading an email, with the average time being around 51 seconds. So, thanks for tuning in, slowing down and giving this your presence and focus. You won’t regret it.

Your mind will take the shape of what you hold in your thoughts.

If you dwell on craving, you will always seek more.

If you cultivate contentment, you will always have enough.

The Dopamine Loop: Are You Stuck in It?

Our modern world is designed to keep us hooked on dopamine spikes:
🔹 Social media notifications – Every like or comment gives a small dopamine hit, making you crave more.
🔹 Ultra-processed foods – High sugar, salt, and fat trigger excessive dopamine release, making whole foods seem boring.
🔹 Binge-watching and scrolling – Instant entertainment keeps you seeking the next episode or post.
🔹 Shopping and gambling – The anticipation of a reward spikes dopamine, not the reward itself.

A little extra science for those of you who wanna geek out with us! 🤓

Most people think dopamine is the key to happiness, but true well-being comes from a balance of three powerful brain chemicals: dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, all of which influence our behavior.

🔹 Dopamine – The Motivation Molecule: Fuels drive, pursuit, and reward-seeking behavior. It’s what pushes you to chase goals, but over-reliance on quick dopamine hits (like social media or sugar) can lead to burnout and constant craving rather than real fulfillment.

🔹 Serotonin – The Contentment Chemical: Supports mood stability, self-worth, and inner peace. Unlike dopamine, which is about future rewards, serotonin helps you feel satisfied in the present moment - boosted through nature, mindfulness, and gratitude.

🔹 Oxytocin – The Connection Hormone: Released through human touch, trust, and meaningful relationships. It fosters deep connection, love, and belonging, acting as a powerful antidote to stress and loneliness.

When all three are in balance, you shift from chasing fleeting highs to experiencing deep, lasting contentment. 😊

And here’s the mind-blowing research that proves how crucial dopamine is: Scientists have found that when dopamine levels are depleted in humans, motivation plummets. Studies using brain imaging reveal that people with lower dopamine activity struggle to take action, even for things they desire. Tasks that once felt rewarding become overwhelming, and even basic effort can feel impossible.

Now, imagine what happens when your brain is flooded with artificial dopamine hits every day. Constant stimulation from social media, processed foods, and digital distractions hijacks your brain’s reward system, making real-life pleasures feel dull by comparison. You start craving more but enjoying less.

The solution? A dopamine reset.

How to Reset Your Dopamine System

Here are 10 ways to reset your dopamine system, regain control, and bring more balance to your life. Read on to get started today.

What comes fast fades faster.

Quick highs rarely leave deep roots.

How Yoga Helps Regulate Dopamine Naturally

Unlike instant dopamine hits from tech and sugar, yoga creates sustainable, long-term dopamine regulation.

Santosha (contentment) is one of yoga’s Niyamas, teaching us to find peace in the present moment rather than constantly seeking the next high. In the context of dopamine, this means learning to appreciate what is instead of craving what’s next. Rather than resisting urges or forcing discipline, Santosha invites us to accept the moment as it is, recognizing that true fulfillment isn’t in the chase but in being present with what we already have. When we stop attaching our happiness to external rewards, we begin to experience the kind of deep, lasting joy that no dopamine spike can replace.

🧘‍♂️ Movement as medicine: Yoga, especially dynamic flows, releases dopamine without overstimulating the brain. Studies show that yoga enhances neurotransmitter balance, reducing stress while increasing focus and motivation. Start the day with a quick energising routine!

🌬️ Breathwork for calm and clarity: Conscious breathing like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) activates the parasympathetic nervous system, preventing dopamine burnout.

🛑 Mindfulness and delayed gratification: Yoga cultivates presence and contentment, helping you embrace the moment as it is. This shift rewires your brain to find joy in slow, meaningful rewards rather than chasing instant gratification.

🧠 Meditation rewires dopamine pathways: Regular meditation reduces the brain’s dependency on external dopamine triggers, helping you find joy in stillness and simplicity. More on this in an upcoming issue dedicated to neuroplasticity.

If you’ve ever felt more grounded and content after a yoga session, that’s your dopamine system working as it should, balancing motivation without overstimulation.

  1. Dopamine drives pursuit, not true pleasure. It fuels motivation but doesn’t guarantee lasting happiness. Bring more awareness to where you feel true joy.

  2. Reduce artificial dopamine spikes. Limit social media, processed foods, and mindless scrolling to reset your brain’s baseline. Your assignment for today!

  3. Try a dopamine detox. Take 24-48 hours off from overstimulating activities like screens, sugar, and caffeine. At the least, turn off any unnecessary notifications.

  4. Embrace effort-driven rewards. Exercise, yoga, and creative work build long-term dopamine stability.

  5. Get sunlight first thing in the morning. Natural light exposure supports healthy dopamine levels and circadian rhythms.

  6. Practice mindfulness and breathwork. Slowing down helps rewire your brain away from constant stimulation. Our free 30 day mindfulness program helps you with this shift and helps you signals of anxiety and impatience.

  7. Prioritize deep work and flow states. Engage in focused activities like writing, music, or movement and plan your work tasks in time blocks, so you can really get into a place of being fully immersed and productive.

  8. Sleep well. Dopamine function depends on high-quality rest. Our sleep issue is linked at the bottom of this article for tons of tips!

  9. Celebrate small wins. Instead of chasing big rewards, acknowledge daily progress.

  10. Create an environment that reflects what you value. Whether for you that’s family, a feeling of safety, learning, nature, or healthy lifestyle choices, make your home a place where you’re not distracted from what matters.

We hope this article brings you to the point of greater awareness of how dopamine may play a part in your happiness, your relationships, and your day-to-day life.

By deepening your awareness, you’re planting the seeds of lasting change.
